Bangkok is a brilliant destination, but a few simple things can make the difference between a smooth holiday and an avoidable headache. Whether it’s your first time or your fifth, these practical tips will help you travel smarter, spend less, and enjoy more.
1. The Visa Rules Have Changed- Don’t Miss This
As of 19 May 2026, Indian passport holders are no longer on Thailand’s visa-free list. You now need a Visa on Arrival (VoA) at Suvarnabhumi Airport, which costs approximately 2,000 THB (~₹5,000) and allows a 15-day stay.
Additionally, the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) is now mandatory for all travellers. Fill this in online within 3 days before arrival — without it, you could be denied boarding. The form is free and takes about 10 minutes. Do not leave this to the last minute.
If you’re planning a trip longer than 15 days, apply for a Tourist Visa from the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi before travel.

2. Always Carry a Mix of Cash and Card
Bangkok is largely cash-friendly, especially at street markets, local restaurants, and tuk-tuks. Thai Baht (THB) is the local currency. 1 THB = approximately ₹2.30 to ₹2.50 at current rates.
Exchange currency before you leave India (at your bank or authorised forex desk) or use an ATM in Bangkok. Avoid exchanging currency at the airport; rates are usually poor. Most hotels, malls, and restaurants accept Visa/Mastercard, but always keep some cash on hand.
3. Download Grab Before You Land
Forget haggling with taxi drivers at 2 AM. Grab is the Southeast Asian equivalent of Uber and works brilliantly across Bangkok and Phuket. Fares are fixed, drivers are rated, and the app is free. The BTS Skytrain and MRT Metro are also excellent, fast, air-conditioned, and very affordable for getting around central Bangkok.
4. Dress Respectfully at Temples
Thailand has over 40,000 Buddhist temples, and many of them are deeply sacred sites. When visiting temples, including the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, both men and women must cover their shoulders and knees. Carry a light scarf in your bag. Some temples provide wraps at the entrance for a small fee.
5. Street Food Is Safe -And Sensational
Bangkok’s street food scene is legendary and perfectly safe when you follow a simple rule: eat where the locals eat. Busy stalls with high turnover mean fresh food. Must-try dishes: Pad Thai, Tom Yum soup, Som Tam (papaya salad), Mango Sticky Rice, and Khao Man Gai (chicken rice). For vegetarian and Jain Indian travellers, look for stalls displaying a yellow flag; this indicates vegetarian Thai food. Veggie options are widely available across Bangkok.
6. Monsoon Season (June–October) Has Its Perks
Bangkok in June is warm and humid, with occasional afternoon showers. The upside? Significantly lower hotel rates, far fewer tourists at major attractions, and lush green landscapes in surrounding areas. Pack a compact umbrella or light rain poncho, and you’ll be absolutely fine.
7. Book Your Island Transfers in Advance
If you’re combining Bangkok with Phuket, Krabi, or Koh Samui, plan your internal connections early. Bangkok to Phuket by air takes about 1 hour 20 minutes, and flights can be as cheap as ₹3,500–₹7,000 return if booked early. Don’t leave internal travel to last minute flights fill up fast during Indian summer holidays and school breaks.
8. Bargaining Is Fine in Markets, Not in Malls
At Chatuchak Weekend Market, Patpong Night Market, or any local bazaar, polite bargaining is expected and perfectly normal. However, in shopping malls like ICONSIAM, MBK, or Siam Paragon, prices are fixed. Never bargain in a restaurant or with a metered taxi; it’s considered rude.
9. Respect Local Customs
A few cultural points that will make your trip smoother and more respectful:
- Never touch anyone’s head – it is considered the most sacred part of the body.
- Don’t point your feet at people, images of the Buddha, or monks.
- Remove your shoes before entering homes and temples.
- The monarchy is deeply revered in Thailand; any disrespect toward the royal family is taken very seriously and is actually a criminal offence.
