Morning: Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, Lady Knox Geyser, Champagne Pool & Artist's Palette coloured lakes. Afternoon: Te Puia Pohutu Geyser & Māori arts & crafts institute. Evening: Traditional Māori hangi dinner with cultural performance (haka, poi dancing). Overnight Rotorua.

Drive to Hobbiton Movie Set at Matamata (1.5 hrs); walk through the complete Shire set used in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films. Green Dragon Inn for a pint in the Shire. Return to Rotorua. Overnight in Rotorua.

Drive north to the Bay of Islands (4 hrs) via fertile Northland wine country. Arrive Paihia. Afternoon scenic harbour cruise & optional dolphin watching. Overnight in the Bay of Islands.

Morning: Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where New Zealand's founding document was signed in 1840. Afternoon: optional day trip to Cape Reinga, the northernmost tip of New Zealand, where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean. Overnight: Bay of Islands.
